Bio

Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Fitness Model Cathy Norris is a Social Worker/Supervisor by day.
I was fairly athletic throughout my childhood, even competing nationally as one of the first Canadian female aggressive in-line skaters. But the turning point came when I started my first university degree at 16 years old. I was anxious to get things done and overloaded each semester, so by age 21, I had finished both degrees and started my career with the provincial government as a registered social worker.
It was during this period that my physical activity declined and my daily diet consisted of one meal (if even that on some days!) – often something quick and easy (fast food literally). My weight steadily crept up on this 4ʼ9” frame and the realization did not hit me until a few years later: I was the supervisor of a unit and accompanied one of the caseworkers to investigate a situation and was completely out of breath running up a short flight of stairs. I could barely speak while interviewing the children. I was empowering my staff and the clients to better themselves but couldnʼt do it for myself.
That afternoon I visited my doctor and was advised that I was in the hypertension category. I immediately started my journey by researching articles and books at the library about working out and eating well. I read extensively about nutritional supplements and the first tub of protein I purchased was ALLMAX Isoflex – of which at the time the only available flavors were chocolate and vanilla! I have been with ALLMAX since then (2003) as I truly believe in their products.
In 2006, I needed to challenge myself further and entered my first figure competition, placing fourth at the Alberta Provincials. I recently switched to the new division “bikini” and placed fourth at the 2011 Alberta Provincials, qualifying for the 2012 CBBF Nationals.
I currently travel extensively as an analyst/consultant to often small northern communities and prioritize the following: I have packed enough food, nutritional supplements and workout gear. Often a gym is not available, so Iʼm hitting plyometric exercises in the hotel parking lot. I strongly believe that healthy eating and training is a lifestyle and not just for the day of competition. I maintain a weight of approximately 110 lbs and compete at about 98-100 lbs.

FAQ

An Interview with Cathy
Your Favorite Type of Training: Combo training (heavy and light weights; low and high reps) and bootcamp-style cardio. I am focusing on adding some much-needed size on my shoulders, so I am hitting that particular body part more frequently and with varying intensity and weight.
Favorite Cheat Food: Caramel Popcorn and Filipino spring rolls (but not together!)
Favorite Diet Food: ISOFLEX Protein Shake Whey in Chocolate Peanut Butter….delicious
Favorite Exercise at Gym: Wide-grip pull-ups
What's in your Gym Bag? Towel, water bottle, Mp3 player, ALLMAX shaker cup with protein for post-workout, face wash and lip balm
What Do you Like to Do outside of the Gym? I enjoy walking our two Staffordshire Terriers (or do they take me for a walk?), RV’ing, snowmobiling, and going for a ride on my motorcycle (sports bike).
How Did you get into Fitness: I started my career at 21 years old after finishing my second university degree. I had completed high school at 16 and immediately jumped into university. The long nights of studying, eating on the go, along with juggling work and volunteer work took a toll on me physically. I always felt worn out and struggled with maintaining my energy, critical in the field I’m in. I knew I had to change my lifestyle or I wouldn’t be able to keep up. I incorporated my goal of a healthy and physical lifestyle right into my life goals – if I could accomplish other goals in my life, I had no excuse not to accomplish this one! I started going to the gym and began researching journals and other articles on healthy eating and training. Expanding my knowledge on how to improve myself continues today. I added competing as a personal challenge for myself.
